Bennett, Bingham in good position as pro rodeo enters busy summer season

Wednesday , June 13, 2018 - 7:07 PM

The professional rodeo season is past its midway point, but July is arguably the sport’s busiest and most-lucrative stretch outside the year-end Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

Several Northern Utah cowboys are showing up in the pro rodeo standings halfway through June. Some, such as Caleb Bennett from Tremonton, lead their respective events, while others have plenty of ground to make up to get back into the top 15.

Here’s a quick look at some of the local cowboys and where they stand heading into the summer rodeo series.

Bareback riding

Caleb Bennett from Tremonton leads the bareback riding standings with $76,895.90, a little more than $9,000 ahead of Springville cowboy Mason Clements in second place. Bennett is once again having a phenomenal season, scoring an 86 this past weekend in Livermore, California.

That’s on top of an 85 at the Days of the Old West Rodeo in Delta, an 86 in Kissimmee, Florida and an 87 and 88.5 at the Clark County Fair and Rodeo in April.

His season-high score is an 88, set back in March in Austin, Texas. Bennett has five titles and two co-champion honors under his belt so far this year. The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is still a few months out, but Bennett appears on track to qualify for the seventh straight year.

Tie-down roping

Plain City tie-down roper J.C. Malone is coming off his first WNFR qualification last year when he finished 14th in the final world standings. He’s in 29th place right now with $17,752.84 in winnings, including a win at the Pony Express Rodeo in Eagle Mountain over Memorial Day Weekend.

Malone has a lot of ground to make up to get into the top 15 and clinch another WNFR berth. The 15th-place cowboy in tie-down roping, Matt Shiozawa from Idaho, has $28,779.44 in earnings this year.

Fellow Plain City cowboy Jake Hannum, the son of the late ProRodeo Hall of Fame West Haven cowboy Jack Hannum, is in 43rd with $14,219.24 in earnings so far.

Bull riding

Former Fremont High wrestler Tyler Bingham, 25, of Honeyville, sits in ninth place in bull riding with $49,319.39 in winnings. That includes a nice win at the Clark County Fair and Rodeo in Nevada, where he scored an 87. Bingham, who scored an 87 in San Angelo, Texas back in February, is looking for his first WNFR appearance

His brother Tim, a three-time WNFR qualifier, checks in at 49th place with $14,595,26 to his name. Bingham rode an 88.50 at the Redding Rodeo in May, which was barely second place.

Team roping (headers)

Thad Ward from Howell (Box Elder County) sits in 24th place with $18,881.97 in season earnings.
